Now’s the time to volunteer for BØ 2016

Volunteering for BØ (Bergen Ølfestival) is becoming a bit of an annual tradition for me, I volunteered last year and I plan to do so again this year.  What’s an Ølfestival, you ask? A festival of oil? No no, pronounced more like /œl/ (did that help? no? how about this?), Øl means beer.  I am, admittedly, a big fan of beer, and I’ve really been enjoying exploring Norway’s Microbrews. So, I’m looking forward to once again helping out at the Ølfestival – and I’m letting you guys know, in case you too are a lover of beer or in case you just want to come meet some beerlovers, that now is the time to sign up to volunteer with me!

Why Ølfest?

This year is the 5th anniversary of BØ, Norway’s largest beer festival. 41 different Norwegian breweries are participating. Here are some good reasons to also participate (as a volunteer) at Ølfestival:

  • If you just like beer
    • Volunteers at BØ get free admission to both days of the festival – and they get a tasting glass and some tickets for samples. So what I’m saying is – free beer!

  • If you want to explore the Bergenhus Festning (the Fortress)
    • Last year – and it seems also this year – the festival was held at the Bergenhus Festning. A fortress containing some structures dating back to the 1200s. Last year you could enter some of these (which are essentially run as museums) free of charge if you were volunteering at the festival.

About Volunteering

Not into Beer?

If you’re not a beer person, I still highly recommend volunteering somewhere (try finding a festival to volunteer for here). Volunteering is a great way to get to know other international students, but it is an especially good way to get to know Norwegians. Norwegians tend to want to make friends while engaged in a productive activity — culturally, they’re not the type to strike up a conversation in the street and then invite you to coffee. It is much easier to make friends while ‘being forced’ to make conversation related to some task that you are completing together. And, I recommend you to try to be the one who reaches out. They don’t want to bother you, so if you don’t want to bother them, perhaps no one will bother to talk to each other!

Happy volunteering! Maybe I’ll see you at Ølfestival!
